??Amma’s New Year Message??
?January 2017?
Mounam?Mounam?Mounam
మౌనం?మౌనం?మౌనం?
Silence?Silence?Silence?

Roughly translated it reads:
“In the struggle for following Dharma and God do not count victory or defeat. How can life truly blossom if there is no effort, struggle and defeat.”???
??? WISHING YOU ALL ???
?A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR?
As you might have heard earlier in the context of the Nirmala Yoga Sadhana retreat Amma very much emphasized on this aspect of spiritual sadhana. We all recognize that the external observance of this can be practiced with some effort but to still that wandering monkey mind will remain a challenge.
Do remember that “the voice of God can be heard only in the depth of silence.???
The New Year started at the Ashram with the ringing of temple bell at 4 AM for the morning Abhishekam. Those of the visiting devotees who got up early had the good fortune to participate in the sacred ritual.???

Panchamukha Hanuman Abhishekam ?

Go-puja in front of the temple

Rangoli in front of the temple welcoming the New Year.???

Amma does the Alankaaram of Sri Rajarajeswari Devi with the Mangalasutra, Nose-ring and the Nose-stud.?

The next stop in the morning is the Goshaala. All the children who were visiting are truly excited with this aspect of the field trip. They not only got the rare opportunity to milk the cows with Amma’s guidance and encouragement, they also got the chance to sample the fresh milk as it squirted from the milking. Even some of the adults jumped into the act.?

Sri Suresh Pyda who arrived in the early morning hours from California, USA was elated to start the year with Amma’s Darshan. ?

The day saw many visitors from all walks of life, young and old, rich and poor, farmers, businessmen and politicians; some new and some who lost their way and showed up after over a decade. But for Amma all are just her children and everyone got personal attention and blessings on this special day.?
Among them were the simple villagers who upon Amma’s directive sang those ‘Tatvas’ ballards with simple lyrics imbued with profound spiritual truths.?
There was a huge crowd of villagers who enjoyed the New Year’s luncheon feast served by the Ashram. And, there was a steady stream of devotees throughout the devotees until late in the evening. Throughout the day there were celebratory activities including bhajans and Kolatam (a type of stick dance). To everyone’s pleasure Amma participated in it too.?
After a little rest following the sumptuous lunch a small group of devotees followed Amma to the Yaagashaala for the afternoon homa conducted by Amma.?

Bhajans continued inside the temple.?
The homa ceremony concluded it was time for Kolatam.???

As visitors dropped by Amma received them in an informal setting in the open yard in front of Amma’s residence.

Soon it was time to head to the temple for the evening worship. We surrounded Amma on the footsteps of the temple while the evening worship proceeded. Once the evening Arathi began everyone went in.???

While seated on the footsteps of the temple Amma asked Ananya (young daughter of Gita and Ashwin Goel of California, USA) to sing the bhajan on Sri Krishna which she sang beautifully during Amma’s last visit to the USA.??
Thus ended the glorious New Years day packed with sacred spiritual activities in Amma’s Holy Presence.???

If there is one thing that best defines the activities at the Ashram, it is “service”. It comes in many forms, and it happens throughout the year. It is the giving, the unflinching giving with love called “Daanam” or “Giving free”; started with Anna-daanam (giving food), Vastra-daanam (giving clothes), leading soon to Vydya-daanam (free Healthcare) and eventually to include Vidya-adaanam (free Education)). Not to overlook is another wonderful opportunity to serve the society called “Go-daanam” (giving a Holy Cow). On the surface this looks different because the Ashram receives the cow as a donation from the devotees, but the cows are fed, cared, and worshipped as the Divine embodiments and not as a commercial venture. The milk they give is used to serve the devotees and visitors of the Ashram. Ultimately all of these service activities are enabled by the generous contributions of the devotees who are propelled with service in their heart.???
Today was the day of the “Talluri family”. Chandana & Srinivas Talluri of California, USA who came along with their two beautiful children Srushti and Shreshta has long planned to undertake the sacred Suvaasini puja in Amma’s holy presence at the Ashram. They invited most of their immediate family members to join in this sacred ceremony scheduled for this morning.
With Amma’s blessings they have also planned for the puja for this morning and the sacred Go-daanam for later in the evening.??
As the saying goes “the early bird gets the worm” (my bad, poor analogy — bear with me); Srinivas who followed Amma on the early morning walk to the temple was blessed with the sacred Srichakram as Amma retrieved it from the homagunda.?

That makes it number 66 of the total of 108 Srichakrams that Amma proclaimed to have ordered from the Vishwakarma, the architect of the Universe.
Goshaala has become the favorite spot for the young children to experience that rare visit to the farm. What better way to have that with none other than Amma, the real Gopala whose favorite past time was hanging around the cows who would be mesmerized with that enchanting flute play of His. The kids had lots of fun and very memorable times milking the cows and playing with the calves in Amma’s company.

It didn’t take adults too long to follow the young children knowing where the fun is.?

Next on the schedule was the sacred Paada Puja. Besides the Talluri clan other visiting devotees availed the sacred opportunity.???

No sooner than the Paada Puja concluded we were off to the major event of the day, ‘Suvaasini Puja’ sponsored by the Talluris. Amma was taken in a traditional procession to the Hall in the adjacent Smt Nageswaramma Building where the sacred ceremony was to be held. Over 216 Suvaasinis were honored and worshipped as the very manifestation of the Divine Mother. Each of the ladies also received a saree, blouse cloth, bangles, toiletries and fruit.
After the sacred ceremony ended everyone was served delicious luncheon concluding the program.??

Luncheon feast served.???

After a little snooze following that heavy heavenly feast we reassembled at the Yaagashaala to participate in the homa conducted by Amma. ??

From one holy event to another; no sooner was the homa ceremony ended we have all gathered in front of the temple to participate in the sacred Go-daanam (gifting the cow). Smt Rajeswari and Sri Kamaraju Talluri (parents of Sri Srinivas Talluri) are the blessed couple who sponsored the event.???

For Ashwin Goyal if California, USA, who is visiting with his family it is a true blessing to celebrate his birthday today in Amma’s Holy Presence.????????
And Amma spared no cost to celebrate his birthday; there was a cake in the morning soon after the Suvaasini Puja, and now another cake cutting ceremony in the evening. ???

“Shesha-shayana Vaasaa Narayana”??????
Later in the evening as we sat with Amma on the footsteps of the temple Prasuna proposed to Amma some wild and crazy ideas of building up a robust financial position. Although she has her heart in the right place her suggestions sometimes sound unorthodox and outrageous. Amma who is very averse to any money raising schemes or discussions would most of the time laughs it away, but this time Amma covered both her ears with her hair to make it clear that Amma will “hear no evil”.??

The evening ended with Mangala Arathi.?

???????????

???????????
???Morning Alankaaram ???

Amma engaged the children in preparing the squash gourd for afternoon lunch. Amma taught them how to puncture holes all over to help drain out the water. We all had the good fortune of enjoying the curry made out of their efforts for afternoon lunch.?

???Our Adorable Lord???

The kids had the usual early morning fun going with Amma to the Goshaala, milking the cows and drinking the fresh milk.
Now for the more sacred Go-daanam event. This time around it was the blessed couple Smt Lakshmi and Sri Yogananda, living parents of Smt Chandana Talluri (in-laws of Srinivas).?

Inspired by the Naidu couple of Stockton, California, USA, who took up a massive painting project Smt Gita Goyal wanted to pick up where they left with her own artistic touch beautifying Amma’s residence. What better way to do it when she also has her good artistic friend Smt Chandana Talluri to assist. They left the hard cleaning tasks to their husbands Ashwin and Srinivas. Here are a few pictures of the work in progress as they paint the greeting elephant motifs around the entrance door of Amma’s residence.???

Gita and Chandana are a great tag team?

While Amma was fast asleep inside the artists quietly carried on the work till late at night.

As the evening approached and everyone gathered at the temple the kids had only one thing in their minds — more games with Amma, and Amma readily obliged and this time Rajesh the Chief Priest got into the act as well.?

???????????
Since Prasuna and I left the Ashram last evening and returned to our residence in Tirupati I have requested Ashwin Goyal of California, USA to record the events of the day at the Ashram and post it. Here is his sharing.??
The day started, as it always does in the ashram before the crack of dawn with abhishekam and pooja in the mandir. A few of the visiting devotees, Srinivas and Chandna Talluri (aka Badris) and Gita Goyal, had the good fortune of participating in the cleansing and decorating rituals for the Shiva Lingam and the Panchamukha (five faced) Hanuman idol.?

Hemalatha and Murali from Atlanta who had arrived very late at night joined the rest of the devotees for morning coffee along with their children, Sruti and Siddharth.

Amma had planned a surprise for everyone in the morning which was a ‘field trip’ to a couple of nearby villages. First, Amma made sure everyone had coffee and tea and then took the time to prepare and pack idlis, chutney and curry leaf powder for the trek ahead. All devotees enthusiastically assembled in anticipation of this morning adventure

Once the procession started, it was soon joined right outside the ashram by Gopi and Rajesh, the faithful ashram pets

As the procession moved further, it crossed the railway track behind the ashram and ventured into a wooded area just before the first village

Upon arriving closer to the first village, children and adults from the village started flocking to Amma for her blessings, who then promptly showered them not only with blessings but also with candies and pistachios

The procession moved past the first village and unbeknownst to them had started on a 2 km trek to the main village. Of course, everyone got hungry on the way and amma fed the devotees and a number of passerbys a sumptuous breakfast

Post the breakfast, as the procession was moving past some fields, Aruna and Krishanveni from the village excitedly came to Amma and requested her to walk through their fields and bless their crops. They outpoured their emotions excitedly to amma and shared the story that they had been meaning to invite amma to their fields for two years now as the crops had not been good but they were misguidedly informed by someone in the village that amma is no longer accessible to common villagers anymore and is available only to folks who come in cars. They were thrilled at the sight Amma of walking through their fields. Amma blessed them for a good yield and accepted their invitation to visit their homes in the village right away

Then the procession walked the rest of the way to the village which at the sight of Amma burst forth into a joyous event. An excited crowd soon gathered around Amma and several chairs were hastily assembled in the middle of the street for the guests. A bhajan group arrived immediately after and an impromptu bhajan session began

After the bhajans, Amma visited the local school on the request of the primary school teacher and blessed the students. Later, Amma stopped by three houses in the village. Krishnaveni offered bananas to everyone and the children enjoyed the new born pups. At next door neighbor Aruna’s house, everyone enjoyed piping hot coffee with Amma making sure the children’s coffee was cooled down before they drank it

After briefly stopping at Subamma’s house, Amma took pity on the entourage and arranged for transport back to the ashram rather than walk the 3 Kms back. Amma happily clambered on into the back of an open pick up truck along with the kids and they all enjoyed a bumpy ride back through the village streets while a few remaining devotees enjoyed an auto rickshaw ride.

It was the end of a wonderful, fulfilling and exciting morning in the ashram.

The final touches of Rangoli and this time Premalatha and her daughter joined hands while Gita focused on her masterpiece of the welcoming temple elephants to the Vaikunta Dwaara (entrance to the heavenly abode of Amma).???

The work continued into late night hours since the Goyals were scheduled to leave the very next morning.

Poor lighting, but you get the picture. Gita has put her heart and soul in making this wonderful loving offer to her beloved Amma with the support of Ashwin and the Talluri couple.

Amma blesses her masterpiece??

And what more do you need when God who is the master artist himself is pleased with your work!
In full daylight, now you can truly appreciate the artistic expression of Gita and party in sprucing up the entrance to Amma’s residence.?

?A Very Happy and Holy?
??Vaikuntha Ekadashi Day??
Prasuna and I were back at the Ashram on this very sacred Vaikuntha Ekadashi Day observed widely around the world in all Hindu temples, particularly of Vaishnavite tradition. Please visit the attached URL for more background and the significance of this Hindu festival.?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaikuntha_Ekadashi
By the time we arrived in the morning we could hear the beautiful sounds of Nadaswaram coming from the temple. As we entered the temple through the Northern door (especially open on this auspicious day) we found Amma seated listening to the Nadaswaram being played, and soon the bhajans started.???
Shankar from Chennai (a regular visitor to the Ashram) who arrived the night before along with his wife Deepa was up early to capture the pictures of the serene atmosphere of the early morning hours of this sacred day.?

The special altar set up of Sri Ram Darbar to mark the occasion.?
Shankar and Deepa also had the good fortune of following Amma on the morning visit to the Goshaala. Besides the tender love and care that Amma expressed on this visit Amma dived into picking up cow dung and later cut grass for the cows from the adjoining fields.?

Amma was very happy to find that the caretakers are cutting fresh grass in the adjoining field for the Goshaala.?

Nadaswaram (clarinet) and Mrudangam music offering for the special occasion. And the bhajans followed after the instrumental music.?

???Sri Gurubhyo Namaha???
Soon it was time for the special festival feast. After enjoying the feast everyone retired until 3:15 PM when we all gathered at the Yaagashaala to attend the homa ceremony conducted by Amma.?

And on this special day Amma had the branches of the Shami tree to which the devotees tied notes of prayers for special blessings and fulfillment of desires (done during Navarathri festivals) brought and offered in the homa fire, so that their genuine and worthy desires may be fulfilled.

?????????????
On a personal note days like the last week are very exhilarating to Prasuna and I to see old friends and acquaintances who have been our companions and fellow pilgrims on the spiritual journey, especially as we have been away from “home” (Pleasanton, California, USA) for an extended period of time.
But, ultimately we should all develop that feeling and attitude that Sri Adi Shankaracharya expressed in the famous Annapurnashtakam in adoration of the Divine Mother:
“Mathaa Mey Parvathi Devi
Pithaa Devo Maheswaraha
Bandhawah Shiva Bhaktashcha, Swadesho Bhuvana Trayam.”?
meaning….
My mother is Devī Pārvati,
My father is Lord Maheśhwara,
My friends and relatives are those who are devoted to Lord Śiva (God),
And the three worlds are my native land.?

It is a wonderful time of the year when families come home for a get together with relatives and friends for the annual festive celebration known as Sankranthi.
The festival is a four-day event:
Day 1, Bhogi; Day 2, Makara Sankranthi; Day 3, Kanuma; and Day 4, Mukkanuma.
Besides the temple going families are cooking special delicacies and sweets to share very akin to the Thanksgiving and Christmas occasions in the west.
Here are some URL links that shed more light on the significance of this great Indian tradition.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makar_Sankranti?
We arrived at the Ashram on January 12th. The family of my cousin brother from Canada and a relative of ours from Tirupati also came for a visit. None of us realizing that it is the Holy Pournima (full moon) day and Amma was at the Yaagashaala presiding over the sacred Chandi Homam. We all joined the sponsor family in the auspicious event.
Noting that the world will be facing some challenging times ahead Amma has decided to make this a regular feature on the Pornima day every month.?

Glorious Sunrise??

Around noontime Smt Pallavi and Dr. Raghunath Reddy of Stockton, California, USA arrived.???

In the afternoon at the Yaagashaala ?

Another old time devotee from Kolkata (fondly called Asim-da) was also at the Ashram to participate. Besides attending the worship programs he was otherwise busy helping around the Ashram.
As the homa ceremony was ending another family of my relative showed up. And this time it is the daughter of my cousin from Bengaluru, with her husband and cute twin daughters. Somehow the word is getting around about Amma, even though I have made very little effort to share about my good of being with Anma. ??

Soon my relatives from Bengaluru left after having a blessed gratifying visit with Amma.
And as the evening approached we all followed Amma to gather at the footsteps of the temple. By then the all energetic, creative and whacky Jaynee of Singapore arrived. and as usual she brought boatloads of candy, gifts and other goodies to distribute to the village children for the main festival next day.?

Everyone was coaxed into wearing the farmers’ hat that Jaynee brought for the event next day.
Later in the evening as the Reddy’s visited Amma I requested Amma to turn the face for the picture — the playful Lord did turn the face, but away from the camera. Watch out for the trickster!???

Amma carried the garland from the temple to leave it overnight in the open yard so that it continues to remain fresh with the moisture in the air and morning dew. It was truly a sight to behold!???

Following Amma to the Goshaala…

After the breakfast the Reddys left to catch the flight for the return journey to the US and Asim-da left a little later to return to Kolkata.
Early in the morning Smt Deepa and Sri TN Shankar arrived from Chennai. Besides seeking Amma’s darshan on this sacred day he came with the mission of getting the video security monitoring system installed. Later in the morning the vendor came with a crew of technicians and he was busy the whole day working with them until late at night. You may wonder as to what is the need to have a security system at an Ashram; after all the Ashram temple does not have much precious jewelery. Unfortunately for the ones who break-in the assumption is that a temple always has some jewelery, and only when they break-in they will be much disappointed. Throughout India temples are constantly burglarized; the Siva temple in Pacchikapallam was broken into about three weeks ago. While the financial loss in such situations is not big it is the defilement of the holy premises and incidental property damage that warrants such set up.

Shankar still found a little time to give the pedicure to Amma.???

The antenna for the wireless surveillance was installed atop of one of the Gopurams
Resolving a few technical challenges along the way the surveillance system went live on the next morning. Shankar and the vendors team gave a preview to Amma and readily received Amma’s approval.

Amma is always ready to give a helping hand in the kitchen — pounding away (our karmas?!!!)?

Meanwhile all day Jaynee of Singapore was busy in the temple decorating the hall with glitter, lights and festoons with the help of Sri Kota Bhaskar Reddy and other volunteers in preparation for the evening function she has so painstakingly planned to entertain the village children.?????????

January 14, 2017 contd…
As the evening approached a group of old devotees arrived and Amma received them in the open yard in front of the residence. Amma blessed Sainath and his extended family first having refreshments served to them and later presenting new clothes to all the adults. And, the visitors also received much spiritual guidance from Amma to many of their genuine spiritual queries.??

Soon the bhajan session ended at the temple, and it time for the “Fun and Games” orchestrated by Jaynee. Although the target audience was the young children even the adults joined in the fun. There were engaging games, singing, party favors and lots and lots of candy for everyone. ?

Jaynee and Bhaskar Reddy the chief organizers of the fun event masquerading with their masks.?
And the real fun lovers – Narayana and Narendra.?

Despite the chaos inherent with the organization of such events involving children Jaynee always manages to bring discipline while keeping the upbeat energy of the fun-filled event.??????

The day started early for Jaynee and her volunteer crew who were busy making elaborate preparations at the Goshaala by setting up a place of worship, decorating the animals with all the FANCY STUFF that she brought including costume jewelry. Amma joined later to bless the ceremony.??

Amma was game to wear the traditional conical Chinese farmer’s hat [called dǒulì (斗笠)]; although this one is by no means a traditional straw or bamboo hat, it is made of more modern non-biodegradable plastic. But it was a joy to watch Amma wearing it so naturally!?

In between all this excitement Amma still found time to get into the kitchen and cook up a storm; first it was cutting vegetables and then it was making that heavenly mouthwatering eggplant ? pickle. Besides Deepa, Shankar and his uncle did the marinating and mashing. At the end we all received large morsels of rice mixed with the freshly made pickle directly from the Divine hands.??

Besides assisting Shankar in the preparation of the Eggplant pickle Deepa worked to string together a beautiful lengthy garland with betel leaves ?. But she let Shankar have the honors of garlanding Amma with it.???

Later in the afternoon Sri Sugandan, nephew of Sri Ram Ramanujam (Carmichael, California, USA) arrived with a van-load of extended family members from Chennai. This is truly a loving and devoted group of families who welcomed Amma and the large retinue of devotees who went on a pilgrimage in their neck of woods immediately after the Navarathri Festivities in 2015. They were great hosts in every sense of the word as they attended to every need of all of us on the pilgrimage with love, humility and devotion.
