Served Lunch at a Medical Camp in Naidupeta

March 26th 2017 – Besides the ongoing service activities like feeding the needy that happen regularly at the Ashram, volunteers from the Ashram go and provide meals to any programs carrying on social service. On 26th of this month the local govt authorities of Naidupeta have organized a major event to freely distribute walkers, wheelchairs, tripods and other support equipment for the aged and disabled. Ashram found it to be a worthy cause and event to provide free food to the needy attending the event.???

?Nirmala Yoga Sadhana ?
The second unique class of the Nirmala Yoga Sadhana started today.
You may recall that the very first class was launched in early December of last year. Attended by 36 eager students largely from overseas it was truly an exciting learning spiritual journey of ten days.
The session starting today is a five-day event and mainly intended for the Indian resident devotees. Although a total of 19 individuals registered, in the final count seven made it (including one Malaysian); Amma appropriately refers to them as the ‘Sapta Rishis’ or the seven sages. They are truly the lucky ones. Amma assured that despite being a shorter course there will be the same approach in intensity, content, variety, fun and the tools for practice.???

The class started at the Brahma – Muhoortham time of 4 AM with 108 Omkarams, silent meditation and a few recitations of prayers, until Amma arrived at 6 AM to begin the class with the discussion of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and the techniques of Pranayama involving breathing techniques.?

A little break at 7 AM when the participants had a light breakfast before the class resumed.
But this time at the Goshaala. Amma is so creative to make the class enthused. This is very much like the atmosphere of the Gurukulam replicated where the eager students gathered at the feet if the Guru to learn with all sincerity. With mild breeze blowing, amidst the jingles of the bells from around the necks of the young caves running around in a playful mood, the calling of the cows for the young ones, and the smell of cow-dung in the air — the setting was more than picture perfect. Amma started the first class discussing than differences between ‘Sagunopasana’ and ‘Nirgunopasana’ (worship of God with form and the formless entity) as outlined on page 310 of the Sitha Mahayogini’s book.?

Here are a few live recordings of the morning class; I request those who have working knowledge of Telugu to hep those who do not know tge language.??

The morning class typically starts at 9:30 AM and ends at 10:30 AM. With the class over the participants have a break until 3 PM when the class starts again. After the sathwik lunch everyone takes a couple of hours of rest from the sizzling heat.?

It’s time for the afternoon class which began promptly at 3 PM; same venue, the Goshaala. Despite the corrugated metal roof, it was surprisingly comfortable as the breeze was blowing. Amma, who is the very author of “Sri Krishna’s Raasakreedas”, and who was himself the hero of the subject, expounded the mystical and esoteric spiritual meaning of that unique Divine relationship with the Gopikas with much passion and authenticity.??

As we sat for the class in the Goshaala all of us also had the opportunity to witness the ongoing work to further improve the Goshaala, acquiring and storage of hay and feed. As there were no rains this year the Ashram saw it wise to stockpile hay and animal feed for the ‘rainy day’. As the size of the herd is growing the Ashram also set up regular Professional Veterinarian examination and treatment. It is very rewarding to watch that the health of the herd has already shown dramatic improvement. To facilitate proper examination of the animals by the Veterinarian a restraining cage has also been installed. ????

Amma has chosen Dr Srinivas Pyda as the right tool to launch and spearhead the ‘Nirmala Yoga Sadhana’ class. We should all take pride that one of us has shown such tenacity and passion to dive into such serious spiritual subject and spent enormous amount of time and energy to distill the concepts and prepare very useful class materials. In order to meet the ever growing interest in the class and to manage the number of such programs on an ongoing basis we would be needing other sincere spiritual practitioners to assist Dr. Pyda. With having a number of devotees who took the class in last December I am confident that we will have good volunteers to assist from that pool.???

After the morning program of the class which began at 4 AM, and Amma’s personal coaching for an hour starting at 6 AM the class took a break for breakfast. And soon it was time for the 9:30 AM class when Amma expounded on the nature of physical challenges and bodily strain in undertaking serious yoga practices as outlined on page 152 of the Sitha Mahayogini’s book.?

The morning class over the students returned to the residential quarters and many of them went to do volunteer service either assisting in the kitchen or cleaning up the Ashram grounds until the lunch bell rang.
After the lunch and a little noon siesta the class reassembled promptly at 3 PM for the afternoon class to hear Amma’s narration picturizing the intimate relationship of the Gopikas with their Beloved Sri Krishna both from a human level and at the true spiritual level.?

In the evening after dinner, we reassembled in the open yard in front of Amma’s residence. Like a great teacher that Amma is, Amma took the opportunity to quiz the students on some of the concepts relating to their Pranayama practice; Amma was pleased with their answers. It was also a wonderful opportunity for the students to ask Amma some clarifying questions and get further guidance.???

The following two prayers that Amma authored have now been included as the concluding prayers of every session of the class. In her infinite grace Amma has been personally leading these recitations which now include some revisions and corrections. We will soon post the translation of these profound prayers along with audio clips to recite along.????

it’s the third of the unique Yoga class taught by the very Divine who walked the path in two sacred lifetimes. It is almost like Amma lit the fire in the hearts of the eager students, you can sense it in their eagerness, attention and their ready responses to Amma’s probing questions. The day started early for the students at 4 AM; and, following their meditation, omkar recitation and Pranayama exercises Dr Pyda walked the class through many fundamental concepts which laid the foundation for Amma’s class at 9:30 AM.?

It’s the third ‘day’ of the unique Yoga class…

It is the fourth day of the sacred Nirmala Yoga Sadhana course. One can feel the enthusiasm, confidence and a sense of accomplishment in the participants as they steadily progress and  master the yoga practice, despite the packed and grueling schedule. One can only hope that the sincerity and commitment that the participants show continues and becomes an integral part of their daily sadhana.???

At last the journey comes to an end; it is the final day of the unique Nirmala Yoga Sadhana class. How blessed are these seven participants (whom Amma called endearingly as the Saptarishis or Seven Great Sages) to receive the guidance, personal coaching and inspiration directly from Amma. Despite the long hours of the class and rigorous practices all of the participants held their own with sincerity and enthusiasm. It was not all serious — Amma’s humor always lightened up the mood. Being the final day, I could a sense a certain feeling of excitement of accomplishment in the participants as well as a little somber atmosphere as all great things come to an end.???

The 6 AM class; the participants have been doing meditation, sacred chants and Pranayama practices since 4 AM.?

WhatsApp Image 2017-03-08 at 5.26.35 PM

The 9:30 AM classes of both the mornings yesterday and today were truly exceptional. Amma narrated in minute detail the Divine Vision of Sitha Mahayogini reminiscing and reliving with passion and authenticity. Besides the mystical nature of these visions Amma narrated how Sitha Mahayogini was honored and bestowed with the titles of “Sadaayogi” and “Mahayogini” by various Supreme Divine forms including Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara (Hindu Trinity). Amma also shared in great detail the life and the yogasadhana of Sitha Mahayogini hitherto never published or widely known.?

In this context Amma also taught the class a prayer recitation in praise of the Glory of Sitha Mahayogini:

జై మహాయోగి జై!
సదానందయోగి జై!
ఓం మహాయోగి జై!
ఓంకార మాతా జై!
????????????

Jai Mahayogi Jai!
Sadananda Yogi Jai!
Om Mahayogi Jai!
Omkaara Maatha Jai!
????????????

After the lunch and a bit of rest everyone reassembled at 3:30 PM for the final session of “Sri Krishna’s Raasa Kreeda”, the Divine Sport of Sri Krishna with the Gopikas. The poetic and mesmerizing mystical details of this unique relationship of the Divine (Paramatma or Supreme Soul) with the Gopikas (representing the individual soul or Atman as Jiva) came out as a stream of love, was authentically narrated by Amma who is that Gopala himself. Although this was the final session of this subject, for the story of this eternal relationship there is neither a beginning nor an end.

Dr. Srinivas Pyda has been spearheading the effort to bring this historical work of Amma in a book form both in original Telugu and in English. Also, guided by Amma he has engaged Smt Gita Goyal (of Bay Area, California, USA), a very talented artist who brought out the memorable relationship and the Divine drama in vivid color.
To appease the curiosity and whet the appetite I am posting a few of those paintings; obviously it is hard to do justice to the beauty of the original paintings with these pictures.???

Just as the class concluded there was a little commotion outside the cowshed. And, it was the most wonderful news; one of the cows (generously given in Go-daanam by Smt Uma and Sri Ratan Naidu of Stockton, California, USA) gave birth to healthy and cute heifer. Everyone got the witness the miracle of the wonderful birth, and many circumambulated the cow an the newborn. Amazingly the newborn was born with the hair formation in the form of sacred Vaishnava symbol on its face. Over the last two months there were five births of bull calves and only one heifer; now the second heifer joins the herd — a truly welcome news! By the way the last heifer born had the formation of the sacred ‘Om’ on its face.???

To help those who are challenged to see the form in abstract, we traced the form so that it is easy to discern.?

WhatsApp Image 2017-03-09 at 12.43.07 AM

And here…… is the new heifer!?????? — A Vaishnavite born!?
Having born at the end of the session on Sri Krishna Raasa Kreeda, Amma aptly named her “Radha”.
Amma credited my son Dr Rakhal Reddy who first noticed and brought to Amma’s attention these sacred formation on these heifers.?

By the time we returned to the cowshed where the class was held there was yet another auspicious event was awaiting us. A cow walked in and Amma lovingly fed her fruit that was kept for the offering at the altar (unfortunately no one captured the precious moment in photos). Amma noted these both events as very auspicious signs in connection with the subject of the study that was just completed.?

Amma then kindly consented to a photo opp with the participants …

The grand conclusion of the sacred five-day intensive yoga class came in the evening. It started at 6 PM in the holy Mandap of the Ashram temple. And, it was not merely a ceremony to award the certificate to the participants for their sincere and enthusiastic participation. It was an occasion for the participants to express their love and gratitude to Amma for teaching and moulding them on the royal path of yoga.
The program started with Pada puja accompanied by the recitation of Guru Paduka Stavam, and the 108 names (Astotharam) in praise of Sitha Mahayogini. This was followed by the singing of the Tatvas by the participants. After a brief award ceremony of distributing the Certificates to the participants, which I ended up carrying on behalf of Dr Srinivas Pyda, the Course Director. Despite his tight personal schedule Dr Pyda has spent the first three days of the course to lay foundation in teaching the concepts and core principles. We sorely missed his presence at the concluding Award Ceremony.
Amma emphasized to the class that when they return home they should take up the Sadhana sincerely with regularity and make steady progress. Amma also encouraged them to share their learnings with others and inspire them to embark on this ancient noble path.???

We are gratefully indebted to Sri TN Shankar who coordinated the course registration and accommodation, to the kitchen staff of the Ashram who served delicious satwik meals, and to the participants who worked hard and in harmony.?

February 3rd was the special festival day known as the ‘Ratha Saptami’ in honor of the Sun God. Worship of Sun God is the focal point of many great cultures of the world like the Egyptian and Mayan; and it is the center of many spiritual and religious celebrations if Hinduism as well. Please visit the attached URL for more background on the Ratha Saptami festival.???
The day started very early with the altar set up in the front yard of Amma’s residence with Amma herself conducting the prayers with the assistance of Rajesh. And there was the traditional preparation of the sweet porridge cooked on an open fire using the dung cakes for fuel. After the prayer ceremony the program concluded with cow worship and everyone got the opportunity to feed the cow with Bananas. And then the large silver Sun God image used in the worship was taken on a procession around the temple.☀?

Anytime that there is a birth at the Goshaala it brings much excitement at the Ashram. But, what I observed is that there is more excitement when the new arrival is a heifer; and that’s because from a selfish perspective when it grows into a cow it would be the object of worship (for Go-puja) and also more productive by giving milk. Amma show no such distinction — although when it comes to the devotees Amma always praises the women for their sacrifice and spiritual focus, and calls men “dummy candidates”?

Later in the day Smt Sithamma, a longtime devotee visited Amma. She exudes the love of Yashoda towards Amma, and has composed many songs and recitations in loving praise of Amma.???

Holy Mahasivarathri Celebration

???????????

Over the past couple of days I have had many a restless enquiries and impatient appeals to hear the glorious happenings during the Holy Mahasivarathri Celebration at the Ashram.
As much as I wanted to be timely in my postings it was nearly impossible to share the events live since I was with Amma during the whole event on the 24th. And since the program of 24th continued into the early morning hours of 25th, and everyone was exhausted and the day was also busy otherwise as many devotees were leaving home. The next day, February 26th was a very memorable day for me to celebrate my 70th Birthday in Amma’s Holy Presence. So goes another day keeping all of you on pins and needles for any bit of news regarding the Mahasivarathri Celebration. And many of you may already be tired of my longwinded laundry list of excuses. And by now saying, OK, OK get on with it. So, here it goes; the first thing everyone want to see is the beautiful collection of the sacred Sivalingams that emerged from Amma. This year brought a total of 10 Sivalingas each very unique and very adorable. For all of us who love Amma ‘Lingod-bhavam’ (the emergence or birth of Sivalingams) is a very traumatic and violent process to watch Amma going through much suffering. But as Amma says that it is an inevitable phenomenon and is an integral part of Amma’s Divinity. In the end we are consumed with the joy of witnessing the Divine miracle and very muck akin to the joy one experiences seeing a beautiful newborn baby. What we forget in the process though is that these are still ‘creations’ in a way taking away the focus from the ‘Creator’ who brought them forth.???

WhatsApp Image 2017-02-27 at 3.53.13 AM

Six Narmada Lingams, three Mercury Lingams, and the large sparkling blue Nakshatra Lingam was the Divine order for the day! The heavy Mercury Lingam on the right was the ‘firstborn’. And, the even larger heavy Mercury Lingam on the left was the only one that emerged in public view during the evening worship in the large hall of Smt Nageswaramma Building.?

If you saw the arrangement of the Sivalingams appear to form of the image of Lord Ganesha, you are truly gifted with a keen eye of observation.???????

As noted above, except for the large Mercury Lingam which emerged in public view, the rest of them all were brought out by Amma within the confines of Amma’s residence with a limited number of personal attendants assisting and a few devotees witnessing because of space limitations. The first Lingodbhavam started in the early morning hours (around 6:45 AM) as Amma was seated on the sofa chair and was quickly moved to the bed arranged on the floor in front; and being the Mercury Lingam it was quite heavy and unusually slippery because of the smooth surface.???

WhatsApp Image 2017-02-27 at 5.21.21 AM

As a carefully placed the ‘firstborn’ on the little copper plate and the moved it to the top of the glass, in a second the gravity took control and it fell into the glassful of water below, giving us the opportunity to share the sanctified water.?

For those of us who have witnessed the Lingodbhavam from close quarters there are telltale signs of the emergence of the sacred Sivalingam from Amma — the slight belching and frequent drinking of water. But despite all our focus and alertness it all happens so suddenly leaving us still quite unprepared to handle the situation as the violent process propels Amma out of the seat and falling prostrate struggling to get the large Mercury Lingam.  The lingam was placed along with the others in the Abhisheka Peetam bringing the total to 8.

The day saw many visitors from all walks of life, young and old, rich and poor, farmers, businessmen and politicians; some new and some who lost their way and showed up after over a decade. But for Amma all are just her children and everyone got personal attention and blessings on this special day.?

Among them were the simple villagers who upon Amma’s directive sang those ‘Tatvas’ ballards with simple lyrics imbued with profound spiritual truths.?

There was a huge crowd of villagers who enjoyed the New Year’s luncheon feast served by the Ashram. And, there was a steady stream of devotees throughout the devotees until late in the evening. Throughout the day there were celebratory activities including bhajans and Kolatam (a type of stick dance). To everyone’s pleasure Amma participated in it too.?

After a little rest following the sumptuous lunch a small group of devotees followed Amma to the Yaagashaala for the afternoon homa conducted by Amma.?

Thus ended the glorious New Years day packed with sacred spiritual activities in Amma’s Holy Presence.???

If there is one thing that best defines the activities at the Ashram, it is “service”. It comes in many forms, and it happens throughout the year. It is the giving, the unflinching giving with love called “Daanam” or “Giving free”; started with Anna-daanam (giving food), Vastra-daanam (giving clothes), leading soon to Vydya-daanam (free Healthcare) and eventually to include Vidya-adaanam (free Education)). Not to overlook is another wonderful opportunity to serve the society called “Go-daanam” (giving a Holy Cow). On the surface this looks different because the Ashram receives the cow as a donation from the devotees, but the cows are fed, cared, and worshipped as the Divine embodiments and not as a commercial venture. The milk they give is used to serve the devotees and visitors of the Ashram. Ultimately all of these service activities are enabled by the generous contributions of the devotees who are propelled with service in their heart.???

Today was the day of the “Talluri family”. Chandana & Srinivas Talluri of California, USA who came along with their two beautiful children Srushti and Shreshta has long planned to undertake the sacred Suvaasini puja in Amma’s holy presence at the Ashram. They invited most of their immediate family members to join in this sacred ceremony scheduled for this morning.
With Amma’s blessings they have also planned for the puja for this morning and the sacred Go-daanam for later in the evening.??

As the saying goes “the early bird gets the worm” (my bad, poor analogy — bear with me); Srinivas who followed Amma on the early morning walk to the temple was blessed with the sacred Srichakram  as  Amma retrieved it from the homagunda.?

whatsapp-image-2017-01-02-at-8-16-41-am

That makes it number 66 of the total of 108 Srichakrams that Amma proclaimed to have ordered from the Vishwakarma, the architect of the Universe.

Goshaala has become the favorite spot for the young children to experience that rare visit to the farm. What better way to have that with none other than Amma, the real Gopala whose favorite past time was hanging around the cows who would be mesmerized with that enchanting flute play of His. The kids had lots of fun and very memorable times milking the cows and playing with the calves in Amma’s company.

Amma was taken in a traditional procession to the Hall in the adjacent Smt Nageswaramma Building where the sacred ceremony was to be held. Over 216 Suvaasinis were honored and worshipped as the very manifestation of the Divine Mother. Each of the ladies also received a saree, blouse cloth, bangles, toiletries and fruit.

Hemalatha and Murali from Atlanta who had arrived very late at night joined the rest of the devotees for morning coffee along with their children, Sruti and Siddharth.

Amma had planned a surprise for everyone in the morning which was a ‘field trip’ to a couple of nearby villages. First, Amma made sure everyone had coffee and tea and then took the time to prepare and pack idlis, chutney and curry leaf powder for the trek ahead. All devotees enthusiastically assembled in anticipation of this morning adventure

whatsapp-image-2017-01-04-at-1-36-34-am

Once the procession started, it was soon joined right outside the ashram by Gopi and Rajesh, the faithful ashram pets

whatsapp-image-2017-01-04-at-1-36-58-am

As the procession moved further, it crossed the railway track behind the ashram and ventured into a wooded area just before the first village

whatsapp-image-2017-01-04-at-1-37-30-am

Upon arriving closer to the first village, children and adults from the village started flocking to Amma for her blessings, who then promptly showered them not only with blessings but also with candies and pistachios

whatsapp-image-2017-01-04-at-1-38-24-am

The procession moved past the first village and unbeknownst to them had started on a 2 km trek to the main village. Of course, everyone got hungry on the way and amma fed the devotees and a number of passerbys a sumptuous breakfast

whatsapp-image-2017-01-04-at-1-43-42-am

Post the breakfast, as the procession was moving past some fields, Aruna and Krishanveni from the village excitedly came to Amma and requested her to walk through their fields and bless their crops. They outpoured their emotions excitedly to amma and shared the story that they had been meaning to invite amma to their fields for two years now as the crops had not been good but they were misguidedly informed by someone in the village that amma is no longer accessible to common villagers anymore and is available only to folks who come in cars. They were thrilled at the sight Amma of walking through their fields. Amma blessed them for a good yield and accepted their invitation to visit their homes in the village right away

whatsapp-image-2017-01-04-at-1-43-47-am

Then the procession walked the rest of the way to the village which at the sight of Amma burst forth into a joyous event. An excited crowd soon gathered around Amma and several chairs were hastily assembled in the middle of the street for the guests. A bhajan group arrived immediately after and an impromptu bhajan session began

whatsapp-image-2017-01-04-at-1-44-16-am

After the bhajans, Amma visited the local school on the request of the primary school teacher and blessed the students. Later, Amma stopped by three houses in the village. Krishnaveni offered bananas to everyone and the children enjoyed the new born pups. At next door neighbor Aruna’s house, everyone enjoyed piping hot coffee with Amma making sure the children’s coffee was cooled down before they drank it

Amma happily clambered on into the back of an open pick up truck along with the kids and they all enjoyed a bumpy ride back through the village streets while a few remaining devotees enjoyed an auto rickshaw ride.

On a personal note days like the last week are very exhilarating to Prasuna and I to see old friends and acquaintances who have been our companions and fellow pilgrims on the spiritual journey, especially as we have been away from “home” (Pleasanton, California, USA) for an extended period of time.
But, ultimately we should all develop that feeling and attitude that Sri Adi Shankaracharya expressed in the famous Annapurnashtakam in adoration of the Divine Mother:

“Mathaa Mey Parvathi Devi
Pithaa Devo Maheswaraha
Bandhawah Shiva Bhaktashcha, Swadesho Bhuvana Trayam.”?

meaning….
My mother is Devī Pārvati,
My father is Lord Maheśhwara,
My friends and relatives are those who are devoted to Lord Śiva (God),
And the three worlds are my native land.?

It is a wonderful time of the year when families come home for a get together with relatives and friends for the annual festive celebration known as Sankranthi.
The festival is a four-day event:
Day 1, Bhogi; Day 2, Makara Sankranthi; Day 3, Kanuma; and Day 4, Mukkanuma.
Besides the temple going families are cooking special delicacies and sweets to share very akin to the Thanksgiving and Christmas occasions in the west.
Here are some URL links that shed more light on the significance of this great Indian tradition.

After the breakfast the Reddys left to catch the flight for the return journey to the US and Asim-da left a little later to return to Kolkata.

Early in the morning Smt Deepa and Sri TN Shankar arrived from Chennai. Besides seeking Amma’s darshan on this sacred day he came with the mission of getting the video security monitoring system installed. Later in the morning the vendor came with a crew of technicians and he was busy the whole day working with them until late at night. You may wonder as to what is the need to have a security system at an Ashram; after all the Ashram temple does not have much precious jewelery. Unfortunately for the ones who break-in the assumption is that a temple always has some jewelery, and only when they break-in they will be much disappointed. Throughout India temples are constantly burglarized; the Siva temple in Pacchikapallam was broken into about three weeks ago. While the financial loss in such situations is not big it is the defilement of the holy premises and incidental property damage that warrants such set up.

December 3, 2016 – During the last month The Vishva Hindu Parishad, a nationalist Hindu organization has organized a district-wide memorized recitation competition of the sacred Bhagavadgita verses. The competition was set up in six age-groups of categories covering from kindergarten to senior citizens. About a month ago the regional organizing committee from Naidupeta came to Amma seeking the Ashram support to provide breakfast and lunch for over 300 participants on November 27th, the day of the event. Amma was pleased with their dedication and more than ready to fulfill their request; and the Ashram delivered and served the food on the day of the event.
Today, members of the Organizing Committee came to express their gratefulness for the generosity of the Ashram for this sacred event. And, upon Amma’s directive I ended up receiving their formal honors that included a plaque commemorating the event.?

December 6, 2016 – We are only three days away for the landmark event in the annals of the Ashram and Amma’s Mission.??
Under the leadership of Sri Srinivas Pyda, a volunteer team of devotees has been working long hours in preparation for the “Nirmala Yoga Sadhana” camp, a rare blessed event with our Beloved Amma herself scheduled to conduct the class. The program will begin on December 9th and concludes on the 18th. The registrants for the class are mostly arriving from the USA, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, with limited number from India. Stay tuned for more exciting news on this.
Besides the early arrivals for the class there were the usual visitors including a devotee couple (Dr Sitaram and Smt Indira) from Perth, Australia. They were visiting Prasanthi Nilayam and arrived from Puttaparthi to spend a day in Amma’s Holy Presence. Dr. Sitaram, a practicing Dentist has been doing volunteer service at the Sathya Sai Super-specialty Hospital and also in the local community. They were thrilled to meet Amma. In the evening, as we sat at the footsteps of the Ashram temple Amma blessed the couple by creating the sacred Narmada Lingam for Dr. Sitaram and a beautiful crystal Ganesha pendant for Smt. Indira.?

It is a rare and privileged opportunity indeed to learn the essence of yoga practice from Amma herself who brings the experiences of personal spiritual sadhana of two lifetimes. How blessed are these participants!

December 20, 2016 –  ???SERVICE OPEN TO ONE AND ALL???The Ashram had Service to the society as a motto from the very early humble beginnings dating back to more than a decade. It all began with serving the needy in the poverty stricken hamlets around the Ashram and all visitors to the Ashram, irrespective of caste, creed and religion with food and clothing. Also, the very inviting and hospitable environment of the Ashram brought visitors of many faiths and sects of religions throughout the year.
Early this year in early March (March 9, 2016)the Digambara Jains (the Digambaras do not wear any clothing) took residence at the Ashram for a few days practicing sadhana and sharing the spiritual message of the great founders of the unique Jain religion which also has its roots in the sacred land of India.

More recently (December 16-17, 2016, while the Nirmala Yoga Sadhana retreat is still in progress) the Gurus and followers of the other major sect of the remarkable Jain religion, the Svethambaras (always clad in traditional white apparel)
You might have also seen a few pictures of the visitors clad in black clothing over the last couple of months. These are the famed Ayyappa Swami devotees who practice many restrictions and observances with regards to and personal lifestyle, and embark on rigorous spiritual penances. The Ashram is always ready to provide food and shelter and make their journey very comfortable.?????

December 21, 2016 – Sri Vasudevananda Swamy Ashram, Naidupeta, Nellore Dt., Andhra Pradesh, India.

Dr. Srinivas Pyda returned early in the day after paying respects to his aging parents in his hometown of Guntur.
Now he is back at the lotus feet of his Beloved Amma, the
Divine Mother and Father of his life to offer floral homage and head back to his worldly responsibilities back in California, USA.
Dr. Pyda has to be commended for his tenacity and leadership for making the “Nirmala Yoga Sadhana” a reality — job well done! Obviously it was only possible with the abundant blessings and inspiration of Amma.???

One of the last participants to depart was Sri Nyoman Bagiarta of Bali, Indonesia who has been a very humble and gracious host of Amma and the entourage during the last two visits. On the evening of December 19th Amma blessed him by creating the sacred Srichakram (one of the 108 that Amma has commissioned from the architect of the Universe the Vishwakarma himself); with this one we may be very close to the count of 70.??

Special worship to Lord Siva also brought the special garlands for Sri Rajarajeswari Devi.?

We have arrived at the Ashram around 11 AM while the Ekadasha Rudrabhishekam was still in progress, accompanied by Smt Bandana Roy and Sri Sunil Roy of San Ramon, California.
In the afternoon we followed Amma to the Yaagashaala and participated in the homa ceremony conducted by Amma. Just as the ceremony ended Smt Uma Naidu and Sri Ratan Naidu of Stockton, California arrived.?

Later in the evening Uma and Ratan garlanded Amma and sought blessings in the open front yard of Amma’s residence.

There is no better time to be with Amma than sharing the precious moments in the evening at the footsteps of Sri Rajarajeswari temple. As Amma receives visitors from all walks of life, and interacts with devotees young and old, everyone present gets to hear the words of Divine wisdom as Amma guides them to face the life’s challenges and blesses them. At times these are new visitors and frequently they are old devotees; Amma is equally accessible, and Amma receives them both with open arms and showers them with abundant love. The conversations continue as Amma distributes prasad from the evening Naivedyam offered to the deities in the temple. ?

December 26, 2016 – Sri Vasudevananda Swamy Ashram, Naidupeta, Nellore Dt., Andhra Pradesh, India.

As we are seated in the kitchen along with the two California families and the twi resident Americans (Elizabeth and Alka), after Amma fed us sumptuous breakfast by making the “Pesarattu” the Andhra special of a pancake. And when I mentioned about the other delicacy of Upma that goes with Pesarattu, Amma wasted no time in making the “MLA Pesarattu” ( now with Upma stuffing — like the loving earthly mother, but more so as the Divine.???
While we were chit- chatting enjoying the breakfast suddenly Amma walked up to us and said:
“It is not enough to just admire and adore the Divine but you should strive to truly overcome the Arishadvargas (Arishadvarga are the six passions of mind or desire: kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobh (greed), moha (attachment), mada or ahankar (pride) and matsarya (jealousy); the negative characteristics of which prevent man from attaining moksha or salvation.) to emulate and transcend to become Divine.”
Amma the turned to me and said, “now send that message”.?

Early in the morning I followed Amma on the morning walk into the wooded area adjoining the Ashram. Being very environmental in thinking Amma had more than fifty Bilva plants planted early this year. Despite the shortage of rainfall most of the plants are thriving. “Rajesh” the ashram dog followed us on the trail.?

This ain’t no Hollywood walk of Fame where movie stars leave their hand and footprints; these are paw prints of the Ashram’s faithful dogs and the shoe prints of the visitors at the kitchen entrance of Smt Nageswaramma Building.

The day before when Smt Uma Naidu and Sri Ratan Naidu (Amma calls him lovingly as Ratanlal) arrived at the Ashram, their visit was very purposeful beyond spending time in the holy company of their Beloved Amma. Their mission is to spruce up Amma’s private quarters upstairs with a fresh coat of paint. With Amma’s attitude of simple living no one paid any attention that the interior walls were showing the age, as it was built nearly 15 years ago and continued with least maintenance.
The story unfolded this way. On one of the days during this year’s Navarathri celebration I have whined with Amma that why Amma does not let me visit the private quarters upstairs. Amma’s response was that there is nothing special upstairs and that I am free to visit. As a surprise the very next evening Amma sent word for me to come and join Amma for the dinner in the private quarters. I was more than elated, but was very disheartened to see how little maintenance was done and not many devotees would even know the condition. That night in a casual conversation I mentioned the situation to Uma and Ratan and enquired if they ever had the chance to visit Amma’s private quarters . They said that they never it either. Now get this — as if Amma heard our conversation the very next evening the Naidu couple got the invitation from Amma to join for dinner. That night when they returned to their room they talked to me at length and shared their concerns and determination to come back at the end of December with the sole objective of personally painting Amma’s living quarters upstairs. They kept their promise when they arrived on the Christmas day. I served as their little helper. Together we went to the local paint shop in Naidupeta and brought the paints and accessories; the Naidus also brought the painting a cessories from the USA. We got started around 10:45 AM and continued until 5 PM applying primer and putting a couple of coats of paint on the ceiling. We are encouraged with the progress we made particularly after Amma made a brief visit a d said a few kind words.??

Uma was an equal partner in this back breaking task; here she holds the ladder steady as Ratan reaches to the pitch of the cathedral ceiling of Amma’s residence.

A few may wonder why go through all that trouble; wouldn’t it be easier to hire the local painters and get it done since the painting costs would not be exorbitant. The truth of the matter is that this whole exercise is a prayerful offering and their loving penance; and for that there is no substitute.?

The lack of rains this year left less than a couple of feet of water in the pond (Koneru) in front of the temple. A couple of cranes found it to be very opportune time to feed on the few aquatic dwellers. But this still does not amount to “Draining the swamp” frequently referred in recent American politics and more recently in the context of demonetization of the currency by the Indian Government. Amma warns that when the swamp is drained it is the little fish that are left behind who become the victims and not the crocodiles which are the true villains who can get away and survive being amphibians.

The best thing about them is that they do excellent work, bring their own supplies, don’t take breaks, and don’t charge for their services except for the sanctified food of the Ashram and the stay in the Ashram in Amma’s holy presence. ??? WISHING YOU ALL ???
?A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR?

From the very holy abode of Amma’s Ashram I want to take this opportunity to share some thoughts for the year ending at midnight, and as we look forward to 2017.
Prasuna and I feel especially blessed to have had the lifetime opportunity to be in the holy company of Amma for a significant portion of 2016, journeying with Amma around the world.
I am also glad that Amma has chosen me as a humble tool to share with you the Divine Diary in the form of pictures and videos and take you along for the blissful ride with the Lord. Many a time I realized that I fall short in getting you the totality of the experience of being with Amma.
Be prepared! Amma is going to take us all to the giddying spiritual heights. You have tasted only a small sample and kick start of that in 2016.
In 2016, Amma directed us to take up a serious study of the Nirmala Yoga Sadhana, a continuation of the teachings from the previous avatar. Amma penned a very insightful treatise entitled “Sri Krishna’s Raasa Kreeda”. Amma personally took the classes on the Nirmala Yoga Sadhana earlier this month, expounding on the Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, synthesizing and integrating with Amma’s own works. Those of the lucky participants of the 10-day retreat will vouch for the unique experience and sacred opportunity to have Amma herself personally guide them with Pranayama practice.
Be assured that Amma has many many more spiritual treasures to share as Amma’s Mission unfolds. But it is for us to be ever vigilant and be prepared to receive them and implement them to further our spiritual journey.???

??? WISHING YOU ALL ???
?A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR?

Nirmala Yoga Sadhana-1 – December 2016

December 8, 2016 – It’s the day before the big event, i.e., the start of the sacred “Nirmala Yoga Sadhana” class. Devotees started arriving from early morning until late at night. Those who arrived early had the opportunity to participate in the impromptu satsang with Amma in the Yaagashaala.???

We have all returned to the Nageswaramma hall to have our sumptuous dinner and soon gathered in one of the large halls in the building for a quick orientation for the class. Pyda garu who spearheaded this holy task had a few volunteers to assist putting together packages of class materials for the participants — included in the goody bag are a handsome custom printed carry on bag, a notebook, a pen, class handouts, a yoga-mat, and a Darbha mat.?

Just like the young kids ready to go to school with their new books and school supplies on the first day of school everybody looked excited. After I spoke up for my preference for a purple yoga mat others followed with their own color choice. ?

December 9, 2016 – The sacred Gita Jayanthi Day, and a very historic day when out of her infinite Divine grace will bless her devotees by starting a unique yoga class under the title of “Nirmala Yoga Sadhana”. It is a rare and privileged opportunity indeed to learn the essence of yoga practice from Amma herself who brings the experiences of personal spiritual sadhana of two lifetimes. How blessed are these participants!

We are very grateful for the leadership of Dr. Srinivas Pyda (Livermore, California, USA) who has made it his mission to make the “Nirmala Yoga Sadhana” class a reality enabling so many sincere spiritual seekers from around the world to benefit from this unique opportunity. He has spent many hours, day and night, over the past year in translating the primary spiritual book in collaboration with a few volunteer devotees. He has also spearheaded in conducting several study circles on the subject book in the Bay Area (USA) inspiring many devotees. In addition, for the class material Dr. Pyda made extensive summaries from the book of the key spiritual concepts and practices which were based on the authentic personal experiences of a great Divine incarnate herself. His zeal and commitment for this cause are truly laudable.???

Welcome to the rigorous 10-day Yoga camp; the classes started in the very early morning hours of Brahma-muhurtam, 4 AM in the large ground floor hall of the Smt. Nageswaramma Building.
A total of 36 devotees (auspicious number!) are enrolled and everyone showed up bright and early with much excitement and anticipation.???

The source and the Inspiration – besides our Beloved Amma and other great Divinities like Sri Penumathsa Sitha Mahayogini experiences and rich spiritual insights gained by the great saints and sages of Sanathana Dharma over the millennia formed the foundation for the curriculum of the yoga class. But this group of students is especially blessed to have our Beloved Amma herself to personally coach and guide.?

As mentioned earlier the first day class started at 4 AM and until 6 AM the participants were deeply immersed in practicing silence Japam ( contemplation) and meditation. And, many chose to repeat the following sacred recitation for the Japam.?

whatsapp-image-2016-12-13-at-3-32-39-am

At exactly 6 AM Amma graced the Hall amidst the chanting of Guru Stuti (verses on adoration of Guru), like “Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Gurur-devo Maheswarah ?”.

Everyone was eager to hear the nectarine words from Amma. And, Amma quickly dived right into the subject starting with the Ashtanga Yoga, also known as Patanjali Yoga Sutras. After a quick overview on the first three stages (Yama, Niyama and Asana) Amma spent much of the nearly next hour-and-half of the class by meticulously guiding the participants on the “Praanaayaama” involving concentration and breath control. The class for the next four days continued just focusing on controlled breathing exercises through the right nostril.

Amma is a perfect Master and the best Teacher. Amma embodies all the noble qualities of a world-class teacher – passion, patience, personal attention, and inspiration. Above all the authenticity with which Amma shares the knowledge and wisdom, and patiently explains, prods and inspires the students to practice truly sets Amma apart. After all it comes from the personal practice and experience gained over two lifetimes — It is not mere “Vaacha Vedanta”, talk of Vedanta but really experiential. And, it is not informational but transformational; not to be bought but to be sought from a true Guru like Amma. Truly, how lucky and blessed are these sincere spiritual seekers many of whom came from far off places like the USA, Malaysia and Singapore.?

Did I tell you that Amma is a tough taskmaster? And that is another hallmark of a great teacher. When it comes to what matters, Amma is uncompromising, and gets to the heart of the matter. And that comes from having no expectations from the participants except discipline, determination and sincerity in practice. There are no fees or hidden charges for this class — including, boarding and lodging and all class materials.

As much as Amma set the serious tone in delivering the subject matter, Amma makes the classes lively with very animated humor. No dull moment!

Also like the great teacher Amma has the finger on the pulse of how well the group is grasping subject and how well the individual participants are progressing. And as much as there was a set curriculum Amma was very fluid in modifying the program and the length of the classes so that it was not too demanding yet remain challenging. The goal appears to be that ‘No one will be left behind’?

The morning class ended around 8 AM; so, that’s about 4 hours of class from 4 AM. Amma out of her infinite grace modified the overall program letting the participants take the program on a more relaxed pace. Yet, the day was filled with learning either in class or in satsang with Amma, starting at 4 AM until the bedtime around 9 PM. There will be many precious memories for the participants to carry home when the camp ends. More importantly there will be carrying ample practical skills and tools to continue the Sadhana when they return home.?

Amma has explained at length on various aspects of Pranayama with regards to awakening and ascension of the Kundalini energy opening the six chakras or spiritual centers. [There are six Chakras.

  1. Muladara is in the anus.
  2. Svadhishthana is near the genital organ.
  3. Manipura is in the navel.
  4. Anahata is in the heart.
  5. The Vishuddhi Chakra is at the root of the neck.
  6. The sixth Chakra, the Ajna is in the head (between the two eyebrows). And, the blossoming of the Sahasrara, the thousand-petalled lotus on the head and the seat of enlightenment.]

Amma went on to detail the three aspects or stages of breath control, viz., Poorakam, Kumbhakam, and Rechakam.
Amma elaborated on the concept of ‘nadis’, that the human body contains 72,000 nadis which channel prana to every cell. And, that the Muladhara Chakra is the meeting place of the three main nadis: Ida, Pingala and Sushumna with a downward movement of energy (atho-mukham). As soon as one begins working with Muladhara chakra, this dormant energy awakens, raises its head and flows upwards (Oorthva-mukham) freely into the channel of Sushumna, the central nerve canal that runs along the spine.?

Amma has cautioned participants and spiritual seekers in general not to get overzealous about the Kundalini raising, rather focus on practicing the pranayama with rigorous discipline and the results will naturally follow. Amma also warned not to share their experiences with anyone other than Amma herself otherwise the sadhaka will lose the benefits of any progress made; nor make up any imaginary experiences.

Amma has also demonstrated the seated posture, and the Shavasana (lying down like a corpse) to practice the pranayama. As Amma walked around the participants Amma corrected the breathing exercises as well as the posture of sitting or lying down.?
On a humorous note some participants found the Shavasana too comfortable to snooze!?

Around 9:30 AM we are back in the class. This time it is a treat of a lifetime! Amma spoke about the “Divya Darshanam” or “Divine Vision” as originally described by Sri Penumathsa  Sitha Mahayogini, now narrated or retold by the very same Divine embodiment. What a great fortune! The vivid descriptions of the heavens and the interaction with various divinities is beyond comprehension for ordinary mortals. As Amma read out the passages we were transported to that mystical realm. We felt that Amma was reliving those sacred experiences because it was her own, and Amma’s body language and passion gave away the clues. It was that authentic!!!???

The class ended, soon it was time for lunch. Prasuna and Jhansi took the lead in setting up the menu for each day; many of the women devotees volunteered to assist the kitchen by cutting vegetables or in other ways. Our beloved Venu Gaddam of California, USA has been doing yeomen service assisting in purchasing groceries, arranging for the classroom, and in a variety of ways making him indispensable and “Mr. Go-to man”.
After a sumptuous meal everyone took a little rest until 3 PM when the class resumed. And the subject of the study this time was “Sri Krishnuni Raasa Kreeda” (Sri Krishna’s Divine Amorous Play).???

The subject of Sri Krishna’s Raasa Kreeda or the Divine dance and play of Sri Krishna with Gopikas is much admired and much misunderstood concept. Amma was determined to bring the right understanding and perspective by authoring a book entitled “Sri Krishnuni Raasa Kreeda.
This is the first written work of Amma which came out like a river of love within a month’s time about ten months ago. You wonder — As the selfsame Gopala, is Amma trying to defend his reputation from false allegations? For the rational beings who realize the fact that Sri Krishna was a mere 8-year old lad when the Gopikas ran after Sri Krishna leaving their hearth and home in a disarray, it is easy to see that this is no ordinary lustful love. It is that indescribable and incomprehensible love between the Jeevatma (the Individual Soul) and the Paramatma (Supreme Soul) rushing to meet each other for union like the river gushes forth towards the ocean.
As Amma read out page after page of this beautiful work it was as if Amma is walking us back in time picturizing every scene and emotion. In Amma’s tone of reading and elaboration of the events you hear the passion and the sweetness of that Divine relationship. Above all Amma beautifully connected this whole play in a very meaningful way to the Pranayama.???

After the class the kitchen served refreshing beverages, coffee and tea. Devotees then went on a stroll around the Ashram, enjoying the well laid out garden, some went to the temple to do circumambulation while others went to have the darshan inside the temple. As the evening approached devotees stayed at the temple to participate in the Rudrabhishekam and attend the evening Arathi. Amma too joined soon and we all sat around Amma to have a Divine chit-chat, and receive prasad from Amma’s hands.
It was time for dinner m, and we are back at the Smt Nageswaramma Building. With dinner over we gathered around Amma in the open yard in front of Amma’s residence. Amma patiently addressed many lingering doubts and questions on practical spirituality that the devotees raised. And that ended the day.?

The day of the cyclone; after the morning session we started assembling under the kitchen shed. Many expressed the desire to have a nice hot snack to go with the rainy weather; and I chimed in for roasted peanuts. Before Prasuna could talk Amma out of it Amma rushed to the kitchen to roast the peanuts. We all enjoyed having the heavenly snack made by the Divine hands.

December 14, 2016 – “Nirmala Yoga Sadhana” Retreat (contd.)
Amma instituted the Omkar recitation (108 times) to start in the early morning hours prior to the morning Pranayama practice and personal coaching session that started at 6 AM. Despite Amma’s clear demonstration on the recitation of Omkar with proper distribution of the “A”, “U” and “M” sounds, Amma noticed that the group’s recitation was not synchronized and harmonious. With Amma’s feedback the group corrected with proper recitation in the days that followed.
The overall schedule and sequence of daily events being same I will limit my commentary to noteworthy happenings for the remaining days of the program.?

There is something very natural and auspicious to visit the Goshaala in the early morning hours; and it has always been Amma’s daily routine.
A small band of devotees followed Amma today to the Goshaala. Amma has instructed one of the devotees to capture the Go-panchitam (sacred cow urine), and many partook the collection but a few with some reluctance.?

Amma demonstrates how the sins that accumulated sit on our head by delicately balancing the water bottle over the head. Did the Lord learn the art of balancing on the head from being around the Gopikas (who mastered carrying milk vessels on the head) in the Dwapara yuga???

What a blessing to have Amma read out and lead the Study Circle on very profound spiritual truths!?

This is a wonderful story that Amma narrates with much relish and spicing it up along the way; Amma is a great story teller.  It is about a wealthy man with a large family who regularly visits a holy man and has done much for his Ashram. One day the holy man asked him to spend the night at the ashram but the rich man was reluctant and replied that his family will miss him and cannot stay away from them. The Guru wanted to teach him that these relationships are impermanent. So the guru told him that he will help him realize the impermanence of his worldly relationships that when he returns home he should keep the pill he gives under the tongue. And, it will make him look lifeless but that he will be fully conscious to witness the drama that unfolds. At that moment the guru arrived at the home of the grieving family of the rich man telling that he can revive the dead person if any of his loved ones is willing to give their life in his place. When each of the so called loved ones refuses to offer their life in exchange citing their own reasons the rich man man gets the realization and follows his beloved guru renouncing the family.??

The class concluded and as we waited for the lunch to arrive some of the adventurous devotees began exploring the woods. Inspired by Narayana the young lad who helps at the Goshaala who showed the technique of tree climbing some of them followed their innate primate skills. Only the other day Amma said how many of us exhibit the undesirable animal qualities of a pig, dog or a cat rolling in filth of worldly talk and move around door to door for gossip. Now you can add to the list the unstable and restless qualities of mind relating to the monkey.?

This is no ordinary canine – “Rajesh”, the Ashram dog?

While the names of Rajesh (the Chief Priest of the Ashram and the saintly dog) will go into the annals of Ashram’s history; for many of us there are more profound spiritual learnings from “Rajesh” the dog.???
Today is a classic example. As we all headed to the woods with Amma he too followed faithfully. For this dog it is a well travelled road as he regularly follows the Ashram herd as they go for grazing. If you haven’s carefully noticed him in the today’s videos go back and check, he was there quietly lying down very near Amma during the Omkar recitation, and he was there soaking up every nectarine word that fell out of Amma’s lips. He fully understands and obeys to Amma’s commands, and leaves when ordered. His only weakness is food; and Prasuna caters to his weakness and so follows her wherever he sees her. But he is truly different from the dogs Amma refers to when talking about animal qualities of man. He is truly a breed apart!?????????

It’s chow-time! The Ashram staff brought the lunch; what a service! What a treat! ?

whatsapp-image-2016-12-16-at-5-08-29-am

whatsapp-image-2016-12-16-at-5-09-10-am

As we finished our lunch we saw the Ashram cows came by for grazing, and besides Amma who they are truly bonded to we all got the opportunity to interact with them.

Along with everyone including Sri Sheshagiri Rao garu of Hyderabad were engrossed in watching the cows and lost in enjoying the nature.
Just then it happened, Amma slowly sneaked up on Sheshagiri garu and lovingly rested his head on the shoulder. Sheshagiri was oblivious to it while I went on to silently capture the precious moment. When he finally realized his good fortune he was embarrassed and elated.
For me personally, there is a profound spiritual message — we are so near and yet so far to the Divine. The problem is that we are so quick in getting lost engaged in worldly distractions we are unaware when God is so near, and even resting on our shoulder.?

And passed it on to Amma. Amma shared a very cute story on many occasions about this creature. A simple village woman visited the temple of a well known goddess and took a vow that if the goddess fulfilled her wish she will offer a special porridge dessert called “Chitikala Pongali” and sacrifice a thousand-legged animal. Soon the goddess fulfilled her wish and the devotee made the usual Pongali dessert and snapped her fingers (Chitikelu in Telugu) around the dish; thus fulfilling her first vow. For the second promise of sacrificing a thousand-legged animal, she brought the millipede. The goddess (stone idol) was shocked at the audacity of the misrepresentation in fulfilling her vows and poised her hand under the chin with the expression of disbelief. The word was out that the idol in the temple has this new expression away from the original benevolent blessed hand position. When the devotee who was the cause of the situation came to know of the rumblings about this, she rushed at once to the temple. The devotee confronted (?!!!) the goddess saying that she is getting a bad wrap for her changed posture, and said “Did I not fulfill my two vows? Why then all this drama?” And she reached out to her shoe threatening to hit if she did not return to her blessing posture. Promptly the goddess (stone idol) resumed her original blessing posture.
Amma tells this story to illustrate that sometimes devotees are very clever when asking for the boons from the Divine.???

After a sumptuous lunch it’s time to return to the Ashram with Amma leading the pack along a new route. Good exercise after that heavy meal.?
Along the when reached the main road Amma satin the middle of the road letting the slow walkers to catch up.
All in all it was a spiritually elevating and enriching experience and was a good opportunity for exercising the body.?

Morning session ?

whatsapp-image-2016-12-17-at-7-53-46-pm

whatsapp-image-2016-12-17-at-7-55-52-pm

Another beautiful day and the Andhra delicacy of Pesarattu (Green Gram pancake) for the breakfast from the very Divine hands of Amma.
Around 8:30 AM we were off again to the nearby forest lead by Amma who has extensive experience wandering the wilderness of Himalayas and beyond.
Based on the visits to the woods over the past two days the class was enthralled for that wonderful occasion one more time to be with the Divine in the stillness of nature.
A good friend of mine reminded me of the ancient tradition when the Gurukuls (schools even the children of royalties attended) were located in deep forests surrounded by the beauty of trees, birds and wild beasts. In the cool shade if a large tree (typically Banyan) while the teacher sat on an an elevated platform the earnest pupils would sit around facing him in a semicircle. The cool shade of the tree with mild breeze of air and in the stillness of the forest only interspersed with the chirping of the birds made it very conducive learning environment both for the teacher and the taught. And there is probably something beyond — on the last visit Amma said that the trees are full of consciousness and they do have an Atma. Amma also noted that we may have also been trees at some point in our spiritual evolution. When you recall that the famed Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment or sacred Shami tree which guarded Arjuna’s bow and arrows when he was exiled, or the sacred Neem tree seated under which Sri Shiridi Sai Baba spread his message you see the sacred connection of the trees in the spiritual life.???

Amma took us to another location in the forest, a bit far from the one we went on December 16th and asked each of us to find a shaded spot away from each other and facing East start the recitation of Omkar. Being a bit far from each other the lack of synchronization in the recitation was very evident. Amma walked around to correct the posture of some of the participants. “Rajesh”, the Ashram dog was taking it all in, and it was amazing to watch how quiet he was going into deep sleep with the Omkar sound.. After 108 recitations of the Pranava-naadam, Amma had everyone take a brief rest before starting the discussion on “Nirmala Yoga Sadhana.”
With the class ended we all walked back to the Ashram, a bit physically exhausted but spiritually uplifted. Soon the lunch was served.???

December 18, 2016 – “Nirmala Yoga Sadhana” Retreat; Sri Vasudevananda Swamy Ashram, Naidupeta, Nellore Dt., Andhra Pradesh, India.

THE FINAL DAY! It is very hard to sum up the 10-days of the unique Yoga Sadhana retreat. As you have witnessed each day brought a special experience and thrill. It was a successful collaboration and cooperation between the participants, the Course Director (Dr. Srinivas Pyda), the Logistics Coordinator (Sri Venu Gaddam) and the Coordinators of the Delicious meals and snacks (Smt Prasuna Reddy and Smt Jhansi Tumu). Above all it was the good fortune to have our Beloved Amma herself as the teacher who poured the very essence of Yoga Practice with passion and authenticity; after all Amma is the very source of that highest wisdom.??
Obviously it would not have been possible without the support of the Ashram staff who provided courteous service to make the stay comfortable.
One aspect of the program that I have not adequately captured and shared was that many of the participants spent their precious little rest period in the afternoon in cleaning up the Ashram campus — weeding around the temple, cleaning up the Goshaala and removing the clutter and overall improving the appearance of the Ashram grounds.???

The program got started as usual with early morning Pranayama practice, and with Amma’s guided practice from 6 AM.
With rare exceptions most of the participants were very punctual to the class, but Amma was on-time every time; that’a perfect Master!

Today morning Amma expounded on one more chapter of the “Sri Krishna’s Raasa Kreeda”. But, there is neither a beginning nor an end to the eternal story of the beautiful pure Divine love of Sri Krishna and the Gopikas.???

Being the last day of the program everyone got a little extra break to relax and pack up to return to their homes. A few of them left at night after dinner; and most departed on the following day.

At 4 PM the final concluding session of the program was held in the Mandap of the sacred Sri Rajarajeswari Devi temple of the Ashram.
The first order of business was to recognize the rigorous sadhana and enthusiasm of each of the participants with a Certificate of Recognition in the Divine Presence of Amma. Amma noted that this is no graduation but a sort of initiation to serious Sadhana. Amma inspired the participants to continue their individual Sadhana and begin sharing their learnings in their home countries.???

Presentation of Certificate of Recognition to the Participants follows.???

Thanks to all the participants who graciously received the Certificates of Recognition for their enthusiasm and dedicated participation in the “Nirmala Yoga Sadhana” class.??

The next part of the program was the presentation of Tatwas in Telugu language, a form of Ballards with the highest spiritual truths and concepts put in very lucid but simple language that even the most illiterate can comprehend. Dr. Srinivas Pyda, the Program Architect and Director used many forms of persuasion and inspiration to volunteer to rehearse and present them as an offering to Amma on this final day. Amma was very pleased with their loving presentation. The night ended with giving Mangala Arathi to Amma.????

Mangala Arathi – Amma came to the rescue to support the singing.??

The grateful participants line up to grab that precious parting Paadanamaskar for one last time.?????

All Programs end with a group photo — but this is no ordinary group photo! It is precious and historic in many ways! You figure!

With the program concluded we were all back to Smt Nageswaramma Building to have dinner. Some of the participants were taking leave of Amma as they were leaving soon after the dinner, and others were packing up to leave the next day.?

Diwali Miracle! (Or as they say in India ‘Miraaaacle’)
As I mentioned earlier Jerry Pesce left this morning to Puttaparthi. And I heard the following story of the miracle along the way witnessed, directly from all the three passengers — Jerry, Riyaz (driver), and Mohan Reddy (the driver companion). Here it is in Riyaz’s own words with my minimum editorial corrections.
???????????
Today morning I drove Mr Jerry of USA (California) to putaparthi leaving the Ashram at 9 AM. We were merrily traveling chit chatting and sharing some Amma stories for the journey was long and tedious. After we completed nearly 6 hours of drive around 3:30 PM there was a loud popping and screeching noise from the right front wheel. I quickly pulled the car to the side and stopped to take a look. Because of uneven roads and potholes somewhere along the way the break-pad slipped out of the clip holding it and was out of position. However much all of us tried it was impossible to get it back in place again. We were at a loss as what to do in the middle of nowhere. Then, Jerry said “wait, I have a tool to fix this” and reached out into his bag in the back seat and pulled out a small plastic zip pouch. I thought he was taking out a special tool, and when I saw the small pouch I was not sure what this special tool is all about. Later I learnt that it was the Vibhuti given by Amma. Jerry then walked over with the pouch to the front wheel, took a little Vibhuti into his hands and closing his eyes prayed amma for a minute; and he sprinkled the Vibhuti on the wheel. And told me to just proceed to drive off and everything will be set right. That’s it! Wow! Miracle of miracles! The break-pad settled itself back in position, and we safely reached the destination. For both Mohan and myself being the first time visitors to Prasanthi Nilayam it was truly a transporting blissful experience. I regret that because of other commitments we had to leave after spending only an hour in that serene spiritual atmosphere. But the journey itself has been very memorable for all of us as witnesses to the all powerful Vibhuti, the power of prayer and Amma’s blessed protection. We remain ever grateful to our Beloved Amma.???

Next morning when Riyaz returned to the Ashram Amma walked by THE CAR on the way from the Goshaala. And as Riyaz started retelling the story of the miracle Amma just smiled.?

Car problems anyone? Call your friendly Divine Mechanic; only in emergencies please.
But do remember to carry the tools of that all powerful Vibhuti, sincere prayer, tenacious faith and ultimate surrender.???

October 4, 2016 – Longtime devotees Pradeep and Sujatha brought their loving daughter Vinisha to have the “Akshara-abhyaasam” ceremony on the lap of their beloved Amma. Aksharaabhyaasam is the sacred tradition of initiating the child into writing the first alphabets; and, in this case Amma had Vinisha trace the sacred words “Om Shivaya Namah”. All the three generations of the young girl’s family were at hand to witness the ceremony.?

November 5, 2016 – In the afternoon we all joined the homam conducted by Amma. As we returned to Amma’s residence Sri Bhaktavatsala Reddy (a longtime devotee and the brother of late Smt Sudarshanamma) emerged beaming with joy holding that sacred Mahameru, and said his long wait and prayers have been answered. (You may recall that I have communicated earlier that I will not be posting news of any more of Amma’s creations; this one will be an exception. Because this us part of a continuation of the Divine story — Amma declared nearly two years ago when he started blessing devotees with this sacred manifestation that he placed an order for 108 of these from the Viswakarma, the very architect of the Universe. This one is number 63 of the 108.???

Elizabeth (also from California) has been at the Ashram for a while. Most of the devotees might recall Amma frequently addressed her as ‘Baby Elizabeth’. On this auspicious day, Amma did the Prathishta (installation of the deity) of the Small Siva Lingam along with the Nandi underneath the sacred Bilva tree behind the temple. November 16, 2016 – The Ashram has been a wonderful sacred place to hold wedding ceremony for many young people from the surrounding areas. Amma places a very high value for the marriage as an institution and gives much advise to the young couple who get married on how to lead a Dharmic life together. Amma especially elevates the role of the woman in the success of the family as she bears much of the burden of proper raising of the children, caring for the family relationships and in the overall successful management of the household, for she is the very personification of forbearance and sacrifice. The Ashram provides the facilities (hall, kitchen and temple) free of cost for the whole wedding event; nearly 50 marriages take place each year. Amma wants to make the facility available for more needy people from the surrounding areas who cannot afford the commercial wedding halls, and has blessed to have a dedicated area for the wedding functions to be included in the upcoming “Manidweepa Maha Nilayam” building.
Below are the pictures of the young couple who got married at the Ashram today and also received Amma’s blessings.???

November 22-24, 2016 – Amma’s stay at Sri Jnana Prasunamba Sametha Konda Mallishwara Swami Alayam (Temple of Lord Shiva), DRN Kandriga, near Pacchikapallam, about 35 kilometers from Tirupati, a major pilgrimage center.
Amma arrived at the temple on the afternoon of November 22nd in preparations for conducting the most elaborate and the most sacred worship of the Mahameru, Navavarna Puja on November 23rd. Amma was accompanied by a few of the Ashram residents and visitors — Pradeep, Jhansi, Elizabeth, Kuberan and Sri Sheshagiri Rao garu, the officiating priest who assisted Amma with the ceremony.?

The beautiful sunset on the day Amma arrived at the temple.

The preliminaries for the Navavarna puja got started around 6:00 AM by Sri Sheshagiri garu. Amma took the seat at 7:00 AM to get the primary puja to get underway. From the time the sacred ceremony started until the ceremony ended at 3:15 PM, there was neither a break nor a transition and Amma sat through conducting the worship as Sheshagiri garu assisted Amma by reciting the holy mantras and prompting with the puja process. Although Sheshagiri garu took very brief biological breaks Amma never got up from the seat for the whole stretch of 8 hours. This was much longer than the similar puja conducted by Amma and Sheshagiri garu at the Shakti temple in Malaysia which lasted a little over 6 hours. The puja called for 9 types of flowers and 9 types of Naivedyams (food offerings); Prasuna and Jhansi teamed up and made all the Naivedyams for the worship. The temple also arranged and served free food (Annadaana ceremony) for all those attending the sacred worship.
All in all it was a very rich and sacred experience and a rare blessing to witness Amma herself carrying out he ceremony.???

We all shared the tight quarters of the little apartment within the temple compound. The temple being on the top of the hillock the days were windy, the nights were chilly, and with the early morning fog rolling from the surrounding hills into the valley of rice fields and mango orchards gave the other worldly feeling besides being very picturesque.

Back in the apartment’s little kitchenette Amma got busy making coffee for all of us, and as each one emerged from finishing the morning bath Amma served the very flavorful hot java. For Amma who doesn’t even drink coffee it is an act of compassion beyond comprehension — where can you find a God who makes coffee for the devotees? I say it is beyond the call of ‘Duty’.???

After having the morning breakfast we made a brief stop at our apartment in Tirupati we followed Amma to the residence of the devotee couple Smt Sarojamma and Sri Dasaratharami Reddy who welcomed Amma along with their invited friends. The couple were grateful for the blessed opportunity to do Paada Puja for Amma and serve delicious lunch to their heart’s content.????

Before we returned to the Ashram Amma made one last stop in Tirupati and that was to the home of Smt Ramasubbamma, the nonagenarian loving mother of Prasuna (alias my mother-in-law). Amma’s blessings and kind and compassionate words uplifted her spirits. All her life she has been ardent worshipper of Goddess Sri Rajarajeswari Devi, and there may lie the Divine connection.?

November 24, 2016 contd…
We are back at the Ashram around 5 PM. Everyone at the Ashram was eagerly awaiting Amma’s return. Just as our vehicle pulled in front of Amma’s residence Amma noticed an old-time devotee and literally jumped out of the vehicle and rushed towards him greeting him. We were all curious to know who he is. Amma introduced This Bangalore resident as Sri Dasaratharami Reddy who was intimately involved in the beginning years of the Ashram development when Amma’s residence and the temple came up. It was wonderful to see the joy in the faces of Amma and the old devotee as they recollected events and people at the Ashram dating back over a decade.
We all followed Amma to the temple to light the Diyyas and take a walk around with the Divine.?

As I mentioned in my earlier postings the Ashram offers the facility free of cost for holding wedding ceremonies. This evening the Ashram was buzzing with activity with a marriage party making preparations for the wedding scheduled in the auspicious early morning hours between 2 and 3 AM.

Back to the Ashram temple where quiet and sanctity reign supreme.??

This mendicant who took shelter at the Ashram is seen regularly seated in front of the Ganesha temple lost in deep contemplation and meditation. Amma is vert fond of him for he devotedly carries on his spiritual practices, and in Amma’s own words “minds his own business”.

It’s the season for the Ayyappa devotees clad in black clothing who observe strict dietary and spiritual discipline to visit temples. And, the Ashram sees a steady stream of these devotees visiting in groups, mornings and evenings, chanting the holy names of Ayyappa, bathing and partaking the Ashram food.???

November 26, 2016 – We arrived at the Ashram around 10 AM and found Amma seated under the little garden area in front of Amma’s residence well shaded by the coconut and mango trees surrounded by a few devotees including Dr. Jitendra Reddy of Atlanta, GA, USA along with his parents. Jhansi arrived with a vessel-full of lemonade and Amma had her also bring a bottle of mango juice (a very flavorful fancy variety gifted by a devotee) and made a delicious fruit cocktail; a rare treat indeed when you consider it is Amma’s creativity and love that went into it.???

November 27, 2016 – It feels inappropriate to see that any ornament, dress or decoration makes the Blissful Divine Mother in the temple look more beautiful. But, as devotees we seem always eager and happy to decorate the Divine to our heart’s content. Nevertheless Amma looks pleased with the new diamond nose-stud adorning her today.?

November 28, 2016 – The day and the week started well for the family of Yogi from Puttur. They are the latest blessed recipients of the sacred Mahameru created by Amma. With this we are fast approaching the count of 70 towards the final total of 108 Amma ordained. Yogi and his wife may be familiar figures to many who attended the Navarathri event; both of them did yeoman service.??

As always the Ashram is visited by many devotees — this morning Mr. NarSimha Chivukula if the Bay Area, Calfornia arrived, and there was Prakash’s brother from Hyderabad who arrived a couple of days ago with his family.
In the afternoon we all followed Amma to the Yaagashaala to participate in the homa cknducted by Amma.?

After the homa ceremony we all followed Amma headed towards Amma’s residence. On the way Amma stopped by in the garden adjoining the temple to show us the early bloom of the Mango tree. Lack of rains this year has forced the trees to bloom early. As you might have heard there is much turmoil around the world in every sphere — politics, terrorism, refugees, and weather triggering much human misery and tragedy. Wonder what else is in the store in this year of Durmukhi (as per the Hindu Calendar) as the Kali Yuga unfolds.?

Amma’s visit to Sri Venkateswara temple, Vinnamala Harijanwada.

November 18, 2016 – Accompanied by my two cousins who were visiting from Bangalore we arrived early morning at the Ashram to enjoy fresh breakfast of tasty Idlies and Dosas. My cousins thoroughly enjoyed the visit with the endless feedings and the overwhelming love of Amma.
Soon after the breakfast, accompanied by Amma we all went for brief visit to the newly built Sri Venkateswara temple in the nearby Vinnamala Harijanwada. The villagers have been praying to Amma to visit the temple ever since it opened late last month. And, finally when I informed Amma that I plan to make a quick visit to the temple, without much prompting from me Amma was ready to make an unannounced visit the temple. Amma was concerned that if they are informed they would make much fuss in making arrangements to receive Amma, and ‘waste money’. All is in the Divine plan and Divine timing. Vijay and Chandu who spearheaded the temple project and all the villagers that gathered were very happy for the sudden grace but pleaded with Amma that they want another visit so that they can welcome Amma in a proper way befitting the Divine.

There is a long held belief in the Indian culture that a school and a temple are essential for a community to flourish; to enlighten intellectually and blossom spiritually.

The story of how this temple came to be is a beautiful one. For the champions of the project, Chandra and Vijaya, it has been a long road fraught with many failed promises and disappointments, but they were tenacious and continued to work in fits and starts. Over the stretch of nearly 9 years from the time they acquired the idol of Sri Venkateswara they never gave up hope, and above all firmly believed that Amma will respond to their prayers and that they will have the temple for their community. And it finally came to be when a devotee couple who continue to dedicate much of their time, wealth and wisdom to charitable causes learnt the flight and strong yearning of the Vinnamala Harijanwada community. Besides their own zeal for charitable causes they were immensely inspired by Amma’s multi-pronged approaches to serving the society. And, with no fanfare they quietly funded the project; they wish to keep their loving act of service very private and anonymous. Finally when the beautiful temple had the grand opening late last month neither the major donor nor the real ‘Doer’, Amma were no where in sight. There was much disappointment by the villagers but they knew in their hearts that Amma and the donors were there in spirit with them. Isn’t that how God works — His works are visible, but He remains unseen. For the donors, the real joy was not just seeing the temple completed and serving the community, but truly the thrill of knowing how their token of love brought the whole Harijanwada community together. It has truly become the hub, rather the heart and soul of the community. This is truly a service model not merely to applaud but to emulate because of the remarkable result it had both on the giver and the receiver.???

Now here are the pictures of that memorable visit.

Amma was like a proud patent checking out every nook and corner, esquireing the operational details, complimenting the villagers and showering much love and blessings. The eager villagers crowded up the small temple eager to have a glance of their Beloved Amma through the grill railing.

Medical Camp at Chintapoodi Village, Pellakoor Mandalam, ~ 20 kilometers away from the Ashram.

November 5th, 2016 – Medical Camp was held under the auspices of ‘Sri Vasudevananda Swamy Society of Charitable Healthcare Services’, at the Chintapoodi Village, Pellakoor Mandalam, located about 20 kilometers away from the Ashram.
We were blessed to have the support of five practicing Licensed Physicians and seven healthcare professionals who generously contributed their services to over 124 patients seeking medical care. We were extremely pleased to witness the profound professionalism, kindness and the bedside manners that these Medical Professionals demonstrated. We were able to effectively utilize many of the surplus medicines that we had on hand from the 5-day free Medical camp services provided during the Navarathri event.
Despite the economic prosperity, and technical advances it is very disheartening to see that the basic medical care is not reaching the remote areas of the nation. Personally it was truly an eye opening experience to see a case of elephantiasis among the villagers even in this day and age. Although I realize that elephantiasis is endemic to the region it brought unpleasant memories of my childhood of the dreaded disease.???
